Cutting Subfloor for Heating Register
Simply moved into a three year sometime house and see that in that location is an open heating duct in the basement to nowhere that should have been installed in the family unit room. I know this because I looked at a similar model a street over and the heating duct in in that location.
I can cut the carpet pretty easy but what tool should I apply to cut the rectangle out of the chipboard subfloor without causing all kinds of splintering? Would a jigsaw with a wood blade piece of work?

You would cut the carpet with a pocketknife, and so cut the wood. You could utilise a jigsaw, reciprocating saw, circular saw, etc. The advantage to a circular saw is information technology allows for easy depth adjustment - the downside is it has kickback.
When googling it to find a video the keyword you probably want is "plunge cut":

A jigsaw would work perfectly fine. It has no easy depth adjustment, but if there is zilch underneath that is not a problem. With the proper bract, neither should cause a bunch of splintering. With a jigsaw you would most likely drill a hole first to create a spot to lower the jigsaw into, nevertheless you lot can also do a plunge cut with information technology (towards the end of the video):

Thank you for the vids. I call back I volition use a jigsaw and drill hole technique. I have a dainty wide opposite molar blade for wood and am willing to become tiresome and steady. Information technology is only one hole.

So clearly the floor joists are accessible from below?
Before you outset drilling and cutting make sure yous don't have electrical and plumbing in the way, and patently brand certain yous're far abroad enough from the joists for the new ductwork.

Drill 4 corner holes and draw lines before starting. Make certain in the basement the area between the 4 holes are not going to interfere with anything or hit annihilation while cutting. Please wear eye protection.

Using an oscillating tool would exist the easiest, cleanest and probably fastest mode to cut the hole yous require.

I forgot to mention vents are usually near windows because of how humans feel coldness, our bodies radiate toward cold "bodies" hence estrus virtually the window feels warmer then heat at the contrary end of the room. High R windows would negate this, but its unlikely yous have high insulation windows, unless they were special ordered.
